Jennifer Smith has been named Piedmont acting city manager.

The Piedmont City Council Monday night approved a contract for Jennifer Smith to work as acting city manager.

The city is also looking for an interim city manager before the permanent position is filled.

An interim city manager job will give the city council time to search and decide on a permanent city manager.

City Councilman Jonathan Hisey, Ward IV, praised Smith’s work during his comments at the Monday night city council meeting.

“I appreciate Jennifer and all that she has been doing. Wearing two hats is not always easy,” Hisey said.

Hisey said he hopes someone is hired possibly by the end of October. Smith is also Piedmont city clerk and treasurer.

The city council recently fired former city manager Jason Orr over a state audit report. The audit stated Orr had purchased two pickups without competitive bidding and violated state law by calling council members to discuss the purchases.

Ads have been posted for a new city manager in the Oklahoma Municipal League website and others.

Orr had been city manager since 2016. The city council requested the state audit last year over a $32,998 pickup and another $25,198 pickup. City ordinance requires competitive bidding for anything over $10,000.
