Guthrie quarterback Hayden Calvert threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Blue Jays rolled over Piedmont 35-14 Friday night at F&M Bank Stadium.

Piedmont led 7-0 early in the first quarter, but Guthrie scored 28 unanswered points as the Wildcats’ flexbone offense struggled to find a rhythm and was limited to 147 yards rushing a week after a 481-yard performance at Noble.

The ‘Jays relied on Calvert, who tossed touchdown passes of 34 and 50 yards, running back Isaiah Hammons, who ran for a 19-yard touchdown and added a 6-yard touchdown pass, and a strong defense to earn the win.

The Wildcats’ offense entered the game with momentum and things looked great early on.

PHS (0-3, 0-1) won the coin toss and chose to receive, and made good use of the first possession.

Jacob Anglin broke off runs of 47 and 14 yards to move Piedmont into the red zone and Kolten Luschen capped the 2:41 drive with a 9-yard touchdown run.

Piedmont’s offense went silent after that, though, and totaled just 90 yards in the first half. Guthrie led 21-7 at intermission.

With Piedmont trailing 28-7 in the third quarter, Cole Riggs recovered a muffed punt at the Guthrie 11-yard line and Piedmont cashed in with a 2-yard touchdown run from quarterback Josh Mars.

PHS couldn’t draw any closer. Guthrie (4-0, 1-0) converted a 3rd-and-16 on its ensuing drive and used Hammons’ 6-yard pass to Tyriq Eaton on 4th-and-goal to seal the win.

Anglin carried 10 times for 100 yards to lead Piedmont. Luschen ran for 21 yards on six carries. Israel Robles totaled 16 yards on five runs.

Piedmont hosts Guymon next Friday.
