There have been many records broken or set in baseball at all levels. And when a team tosses two no-hitters in one day, it’s as big as it gets.
That’s what Piedmont’s Jacob Ellis and Jared Gay turned in Tuesday, tossing five innings of no-hit ball each against Bishop McGuinness to help the Cats sweep a double-header and improve to 20-5 on the season.
Ellis racked up 12 strikeouts and walked four batters in his no-hit bid in the first game of the series. He needed just 83 pitches to finish off the Irish. Gay racked up eight punch outs in the second game and allowed just two base runners on walks. He needed just 80 pitches in his shutout performance.
The Wildcats racked up 12 hits in the first game on rout to a 10-0 win.
Five players finished with two hits, incuding Anthony Morejon who went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBI. Jack Chester went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI, Dylan Hampton went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, Tabor McClure went 2-for-3 with a double and Brady Thomas finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Cats racked up 10 hits in the second game for a 11-0 win.
Thomas, Skyler Fenton and McClure all finished with two hits in the game. Fenton went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Thomas went 2-for-3 with two runs driven in and McClure went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Chester clobbered a solo home run and walked in the game while the team combined to draw five walks.
With the two wins the Wildcats improved to 10-0 in District 5A-2, tied atop of the standing with Carl Albert who is also 10-0 in district play. The two teams clash Monday and Tuesday to likely decide the district champion.
First the Cats travel to McAlester for the 2019 McAlester Shootout tournament this weekend. Piedmont is scheduled to take on Durant in the tournament opener tonight at 7 p.m. with a pair of second-day match ups against Claremore and Class 6A Muskogee Friday. The Cats take on host McAlester Saturday at 11 p.m.The McAlester Shootout is scheduled as planned, but game times could be delayed or postponed due to possible thunderstorms Wednesday evening.
Piedmont reurns to district play to host the Titans Monday at 5 p.m. before capping the standings at Carl Albert Tuesday at 5 p.m.
