DURANT – The projected weather curbed Piedmont’s chance for its first tournament championship over the weekend but did not cease the team’s win streak to start the year.
The fifth-ranked Wildcats held Denison High School (Tex.) to single-digit scoring in all four quarters Friday to cap an abbreviated 2018 Durant Lion Classic with their second win, 42-30 while pushing their win streak to four.
Piedmont held the Yellow Jackets to 27-percent shooting overall, including 2-for-14 from three-point range. Denison also only attempted six free throws, hitting four. The Wildcats shot 44-percent from the field with 22 points in the paint, including 11 second-chance points off eight offensive rebounds.
The Cats jumped out to an early lead, 14-8 after the first quarter and carried a 20-16 advantage into halftime. Piedmont outscored Denison 22-14 in the second half to seal the victory.
Senior Maci Attalla led the Wildcats offensively, recording a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The Crawford sisters, senior Regan and sophomore Delanie, each scored nine points.
Delanie finished with six boards and Regan led the team with four assists. Zaycia Guthrie led Denison with 10 points and five rebounds.
Following the game, Attalla and Delanie Crawford were each named tot he All-Tournament team.
