Despite a water line break near Piedmont High School, the high school, Piedmont Elementary School, administration building and the Middle School of Piedmont will be open Friday.

An announcement was made before 6 a.m. Friday that the City of Piedmont had restored water to the buildings and classes will resume Friday, the district reported at 5:50 a.m. Friday.

A water main break impacted Piedmont High School and The Middle School of Piedmont and administration building Thursday, according to a message sent by the district to patrons on Thursday. Late Thursday, it was not known overnight if water would be restored in time to have classes on Friday.

On Thursday, school officials reported the problem first. Late Thursday night, school officials released the following message.

“Today, (Thursday) a water main break in Piedmont affected several PPS school sites. At this time, water has not been restored to Piedmont Elementary, the Middle School of Piedmont, Piedmont High School, or the administration building, which houses the employee childcare center.

We will notify you by 6 a.m. on Friday, October 11th, regarding the status of the water outage. We will let you know if the affected sites will remain closed or if the water pressure has been restored and all schools will be in session.

School will be in session at Stone Ridge Elementary, Piedmont Early Childhood Center, Northwood Elementary, and Piedmont Intermediate.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.”

A text message and email to Piedmont patrons at 12:16 p.m. Thursday reports that students can be checked out by a parent or guardian at any time. Buses will operate on their regular schedules.

The Piedmont band fall jazz ensemble concert was canceled Thursday night. The regional softball tournament was played and ended Thursday afternoon.

The City of Piedmont reported at 1:23 p.m. Thursday the location of the water main break.

“We have a water main line break on Piedmont Road and water is expected to be off until this evening while crews work to repair the line. City Hall will be closed for the remainder of the day.

In recent days, the City of Piedmont has reported crews have been working at the area of NW 178 and N Edmond Road, but it was not immediately known if it was related.

Piedmont has experienced low water pressure in parts of town during extremely dry spells. Eastern Canadian County is under abnormally dry conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Water woes in Piedmont, drought not helping

Upgrades are underway, but water pressure has been low in places in Piedmont with the recent dry spell.

Low water pressure was reported at NW 178th / Edmond Road and N Piedmont Road this week, the city of Piedmont reported in a Facebook post.

“Update 10/8/24 @ 5pm – the contractor is working as quickly as they can to make all service connections and restore water. We understand the inconvenience this is causing and appreciate your patience. What was supposed to be a few hours job has obviously taken longer than anticipated. We are being told it could be a few more hours before the work is complete.

The busy area of NW 178th & Piedmont Rd, where utility line work has continued around the Wildcat Corner development, had low water pressure the morning of Oct. 8, a city of Piedmont Facebook post reads.

The contractor was tying in to main line and work was estimated to last around 3 to 4 hours. “We apologize for the inconvenience, just wanted to give everyone a little heads up and time to prep if necessary,” the post reads.
