MIDWEST CITY – The first game in Class 6A for the Piedmont Wildcats was a victory over Midwest City High School Friday night.

Piedmont’s kicker Noah Ward hit two field goals, and the offense racked up yardage and ate up clock as the Wildcats downed the Midwest City Bombers 13-0 in their season opener on the road.

A 32-yard field goal with 9:01 to go in the game gave the Wildcats a commanding lead and Midwest City couldn’t muster enough offense to make a threat.

Defense had been solid for Piedmont going into the fourth quarter.

Piedmont quarterback Grayson May used his legs in the flexbone offense to tack on the rushing yardage and keep possession of the ball from the Midwest City offense.

The Wildcats scored their first TD of the year with a rushing score from sophomore running back DreAndre Bruton with 4:12 to go in the first quarter.

Midwest City’s offense was stymied late in the fourth quarter by holding penalties, nullifying big gains from the Bombers Jahhim Mahmoud.

The Bombers drove into Piedmont territory with about 7 minutes to go. But senior Mikah Rocco intercepted a tipped ball, stopping the threat.

The flexbone offense wore down Midwest City, and Piedmont opened their 6A era with a victory over the last team from the western part of the state to win a state championship in the state’s largest school class back in 1995.
