Piedmont voters say no to general obligation bond issues

The three propositions for general obligation bond issues in Piedmont were heavily defeated by voters at the polls according to early results from the Canadian County Election Board

Voters in Piedmont decided the fate of three proposed general obligation bond issues Tuesday when they headed to the polls.

The Piedmont propositions totaled $16.7 million for streets and roads, municipal buildings and a sports complex.

Proposition one on the Piedmont ballots was for $10,125,000 to fund street, roads and intersections, including lighting, sidewalks, bike paths, landscaping, drainage, driveway and other related improvements.

With four of four precincts counted at 9 p.m. Tuesday, the unofficial results showed just 665 yes votes or 36.66% in favor, to 1,149 no votes, or 63.34% against it.

The second proposal was for $4,665,000 to construct, expand, repair, renovate, acquire and equip sports and recreational facilities, all to be owned exclusively by the city in phase one.

Voters defeated it with four of four precincts counted, the state election board reported. The vote was 281 yes, or 15.47% to 1,535 no votes, 84.53% against it.

The third proposition was for $1,910,000 to acquire, construct, expand, renovate, repair and equip municipal buildings, facilities and equipment including fire, police and public works facilities.

The vote was 73.68% against it with 1,338 no votes to 478 yes votes, or just 26.32%.

The proposals would have raised property taxes if approved.
