Just 13 miles east of Piedmont, the sunrise at Deer Creek High School Saturday morning brought pink and red hues to the sky as the 2024 cross country season gun sounded off, and high school runners hit the trails.
The day also brought the first victories for the boys and girls from Piedmont as both squads crushed the fields at the Deer Creek Field Run Festival.
The varsity boys overall placed first with 64 team points, ahead of Deer Creek’s team that finished with 112 team points and Mustang, 113 points for third place. The lower totals win in cross country scoring.
Nelin Kimery for Piedmont finished seventh with a time of 16:03.24.
Riley Pauley finished eighth, 16:04.29.
Girls win too
The girls’ varsity overall score was 33, followed by Jenks, 61and Edmond North High School 92.
Sisters Brooke Collins and Claire Collins finished fifth and sixth.
Brooke Collins time was 18:40.90 and Claire’s time was 18:42.90.
Finishing 10th was Anna Caldwell 19:14.43 and Emily Caldwell 19:15.25, was in 11th place. And Preslie Finch was 19:19.64 in 12th place.
