GEARY – Piedmont took its chances with a rough-and-tumble field at the 78th annual Geary Invitational last Friday and Saturday, with 120-pound junior Cash Donnell pacing the Wildcats with a runner-up finish in the prestigious event held inside Geary High School’s Stegall Long Fieldhouse.

Donnell coasted to the finals despite a loaded field. The junior earned a bye in the first round then dispatched of Marlow’s Keller Kizarr with a fall only 0:55 into their match.

Donnell gave Collinsville’s Canon Acklin the same fate as Kizarr in his next bout as the Piedmont star extended his winning streak to 48 matches with a second-period pin. In the semifinals, Donnell forged a 9-0 major decision against River Perlungher of Arlington Martin (Texas).

Stillwater’s Sam Smith stopped Donnell in the finals, though, to end his winning streak at 49 consecutive matches. Smith is the son of Oklahoma State University wrestling coach John Smith.

Afterwards, Donnell was awarded the Alan Long Sportsmanship Award, as voted on by the coaches at the tournament.

At 138 pounds, sophomore Jayden Fuston won three matches, but needed two more wins to place. Jackson Blackburn (175 pounds) and Brogan Hardy (215 pounds) also each won three matches but needed a couple more victories to earn a place on the podium.

Piedmont is off until Jan. 17 when the Wildcats travel to Westmoore for a dual vs. the Jaguars.
