BLACKSBURG, Va. – Trevin Michael had everything in his arsenal working Friday afternoon.

The result was a dominant six-up, six-down performance as the Piedmont native earned his team-best 10th save as the Oklahoma Sooners downed Virginia Tech, 5-4, in Game 1 of a best-of-three Super Regional.

The Sooners are now one win away from their first College World Series berth since 2010.

Michael used a devastating 12-to-6 curve ball, a wicked changeup and a fastball that touched 96 MPH as he struck out the first four batters he faced after entering the game in the eighth inning.

Two fly balls ended the game as the Sooners held on after leading 5-0 through 5 1/2 innings.

Michael transferred to OU after spending two seasons at Lamar University. He emerged as a mainstay out of the Sooner bullpen in April and closed out Oklahoma’s Big 12 Tournament Championship game win over Texas at Globe Life Field in Arlington in late May.

He showed his versatility last Monday in the regional final against Florida by pitching six innings with five strikeouts while allowing only one earned run. OU won 5-4, though Michael did not record a decision.

The former Piedmont star has totaled 86 strikeouts in 62.1 innings this season.

OU and Virginia Tech will play Game 2 Saturday at 11 a.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
