MIDWEST CITY – With Piedmont trailing Carl Albert 2-1 and a district title on the line, Trey Migl and the Wildcats were down to their final strike.

The Titans, a perennial power in Class 5A, were on the verge of completing a two-game sweep of the ‘Cats to claim another district title.

Migl had other ideas.

On the next pitch he delivered a bases-clearing, three-RBI double to left-center field that silenced a raucous Titan crowd and sent Piedmont’s dugout into a frenzy as the Wildcats rallied for a 5-2 win that clinched the program’s first district championship since 2016.

“That’s as clutch as it gets,” head coach Adam Skokowski said. “He waited for a good pitch and drove it.”

The rally began with a Gabe Clyden leadoff single. After two outs, Dax Priddy singled to right field and Dalton Hampton walked to juice the bases for Migl, who came through with the most important hit of his career.

Logan Hill followed Migl’s smash with an RBI-double of his own to pad Piedmont’s lead.

With momentum squarely on the ‘Cats’ side, starting pitcher Fidel Hatch retired the Titans in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

Hatch, a McPherson College signee, pitched a complete game while lowering his ERA on the season to 1.60. Although Caleb Lunnon fills the top spot in Piedmont’s pitching rotation, Hatch has arguably been more dominant. He has 74 strikeouts in 43.2 innings.

“Fidel has been phenomenal for us this season,” Skokowski said. “It’s a slight to call him a No. 2. We really have two No. 1s.”

Piedmont (24-7) will host its senior night game vs. Deer Creek Thursday. The Antlers and Wildcats will also finish the remainder of a game suspended due to weather om March 17. The game will resume in the fifth inning with PHS leading 3-0.

On Friday, Piedmont will travel to Putnam City North before closing the regular season vs. Kingfisher Monday.

Piedmont will host the regional round of the playoffs beginning Wednesday, May 4 or Thursday, May 5.
