Staffing shortages at Piedmont Public Schools sites have resulted in a plan for virtual learning for Thursday and Friday.

All Piedmont Schools will shift to “short-term virtual instruction” for the rest of the week, Thursday, Jan. 13 and Friday, Jan. 14.

Students and staff members who are not ill or exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms may return to in-person learning Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Monday, Jan. 17 is the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday and there is no school.

“Piedmont Schools is committed to making every effort to provide in-person instruction for our students. PPS district leaders are closely monitoring COVID-19 cases and staff and student absences at all school sites,” a message sent to patrons in the district read Tuesday afternoon shortly after an announcement that two schools had to go to virtual learning on Wednesday.

“We understand the burden this places on our families,” a statement from the district read late Wednesday. “We are simply unable to safely supervise and cover all employee absences at this time. First and second-grade students will bring home a learning packet to complete during the remainder of this week.”

A statement released reads, “The health and medical needs of staff and students are superseding the requirement of services for our students with special needs. As such, recovery services/sessions will be provided upon the return to in-person learning.”

School meals will be offered at Piedmont Intermediate or Stone Ridge Elementary from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday. To pick up meals, go to the doors at the back of building where students will receive lunch and breakfast for the day, the district reports.
