A Piedmont High School student faces possible criminal charges in connection with a reported threat on social media, according to Piedmont Schools and police officials.

Tuesday morning, administrators at Piedmont High School were notified of a threat made on social media regarding Piedmont High School.

Students were placed on lockdown, and various law enforcement agencies were contacted immediately. A student was detained and placed in custody while the threat was investigated, district officials reported.

Police Chief Scott Singer said the student was released to the parents’ custody Tuesday morning.

Police investigators will present information on the case to the Canadian County District Attorney’s office where criminal charges against the student will be considered, a police spokesman said Tuesday afternoon.

In a separate incident, a threat was found written on a restroom wall at the high school in October. The school was placed on lockdown, and the threat was investigated police report. That incident is not connected to the most recent one, police report.

“All threats at Piedmont Public Schools are investigated promptly and thoroughly. We will continue to be vigilant regarding any other potential security concerns,” according to a statement from the district.
“As always, we encourage our students and families to report any questionable behaviors,” the statement from the district reports.
