Piedmont knew its 0-3 start to the season didn’t match the kind of football it had played.

Still, a team is only as good as its record, so beating Guymon 70-6 was a nice reminder that the Wildcats were on the right track. And a win by more than nine touchdowns? That can’t help but make a team feel better.

“We executed and blocked well up front,” head coach Jeff Hall said of the performance.

Hall said his team’s confidence never waned after the 0-3 start. With three opponents that have combined to go 11-4 so far this season, there simply wasn’t much room for error.

“We had our chances in all of those games,” Hall said. “When you go back and look at the some of the things that went wrong, we learned a lot.”

Next up for PHS is a Thursday night matchup at Western Heights. Kickoff is at 7.

The Jets are 0-5 and haven’t scored a point yet this season. On paper, it’s a game that should give Piedmont a chance to work out kinks while still piling up big numbers.

“We are worried about getting better,” Hall said. “We want to do that every week and I think we’ve done that so far.”

Avoiding penalties will be key, as always. Piedmont’s had a few too many this season and some have been costly.

The Wildcats want to fine-tune their passing attack as well. Piedmont doesn’t throw often, but when they do they want to gain big yards to discourage teams from crowding the line of scrimmage.

“We throw passes to score touchdowns,” Hall said.

Piedmont hit its first long completion this season vs. Guymon, a 35-yard touchdown pass from Josh Mars to Cole Riggs. Racking up another big play in the passing game this week would be nice.

And Hall said they hope to get Mars more involved on called quarterback runs. The sophomore ran for 100 yards against Guymon, including a 63-yard touchdown run.

“For our offense to be as good as it can, Josh has to run the ball for us more,” Hall said.
