OKLAHOMA CITY – Piedmont’s final dress rehearsal for the 2021 football season ended perfectly.

Jacob Copeland ran for a four-yard touchdown on the final play of Thursday night’s scrimmage to cap a methodical drive and give the Wildcats a 7-0 ‘win’ over Class 2A
Millwood.

The teams played only one full quarter of football, but Piedmont controlled the 12-minute period, culminating with a 65-yard drive that included a fourth down conversion.

Head coach Jeff Hall said it was a great way to end the night, particularly because Piedmont finished the drive with a red zone score.

“Last year, I felt like that was our weakness and we finished it (tonight),” Hall said. “It’s definitely something we’ve put a lot of time into.”

The ‘Cats defense forced Millwood and star quarterback Rickey Hunt Jr. to punt on their only drive.

The Falcons are, traditionally, a program that can overwhelm opponents with speed, but Millwood didn’t find any room in the open field Thursday.

“Most of the time when someone plays Millwood, there’s a definite (speed) difference between the two teams,” Hall said. “But I feel like we kind of looked like we belonged with them. Very proud of that.”

Piedmont defensive back Alex Kopp had an interception in the warm-up portion of the scrimmage.

“Obviously that was good…and we had some opportunities in the scrimmage portion of it (to intercept some others) that I’m sure our defensive back coaches are going to go back and watch and scratch their heads about,” Hall said.

Piedmont opens the regular season next Friday at El Reno.
