PHS softball off to quick start

PRYOR – Piedmont’s softball team is out of the gates quickly to open the 2021 season.

The Lady Wildcats on Tuesday came from behind with two runs in the sixth inning to edge Pryor, 4-3, at the East-West Showdown in Pryor.

In the top of the sixth with Piedmont trailing 3-2, Aubrey Pyle delivered an RBI single that served as the game-winning hit for PHS (3-0). Addison Cassady had tied the game with an RBI-single earlier in the inning.

Hannah Nieuwenhuis earned the win by pitching 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with five strikeouts while allowing just one hit. She retired Pryor in order in the seventh to end the game.

The Lady Wildcats outhit the Tigers 10-3, but trailed 1-0 and 3-2 before rallying.

Karissa Fiegener and Payton Gray had two hits apiece for Piedmont.

Payten Schibbelhute started in the circle for the Lady Wildcats. She lasted 4.1 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits. She had four strikeouts and walked three batters.

Piedmont opened the season Monday with a doubleheader sweep at Bishop McGuinness (15-0, 16-1).
