A narrow, two-lane bridge in a growing area of northeast Canadian County will be replaced this year, and preliminary work to purchase right-of-way property was approved by county commissioners this week.
The bridge is on Waterloo/Azalea Road just west of County Line and east of Sara Road in far northeast Canadian County near the Falcon Lake addition.
Right-of-way and land acquisition is almost complete, said Commissioner Marc Hader, Canadian County District I.
Commissioners in a Monday, Feb. 8 meeting approved right-of-way acquisition work by Smith-Roberts Land Services in the amount of $1,800.
The bridge is near the Falcon Lake addition. Bids will be taken for the work in late spring, 2021, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation reports.
The bridge is a project funded by the County, Roads and Bridges state fund, Hader said.
The estimated cost of the project is about $690,000, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation reported. Work is expected to start this year.
“The bridge is on the border between us, (Canadian) and Kingfisher County,” Hader said. “We are now buying up some right-of-way from people on both sides for slopes off of the bridge. It is going to be elevated to make it less of a vertical curve.”
An ODOT traffic count in the area is about 1,700 a day.
Populations have increased in recent years in the Cashion area northeast of Piedmont. The north side of the road is in Kingfisher County.
Environmental studies have been completed for the project. Utility relocation agreements have also been filed.
The cost will be about $700,000 for the new concrete bridge, an ODOT spokeswoman reports.
Funding is through the ODOT Oklahoma County Improvement for Roads and Bridges program.
Work will be done to move fence on property before the rest of the project will go out for bids. He said it should be soon
Waterloo/Azalea Road has been improved recently for about a mile and quarter in the area, Hader said.
The area is known as the “Four Corners Area,” near the borders of Canadian, Oklahoma, Logan and Kingfisher counties.
County Commissioners are also working on projects for road improvements with the City of Piedmont, City of Yukon and the Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribes.
