The Piedmont Wildcats kept the football game close in the first half, but were defeated by the Carl Albert Titans 42-7 Saturday at F&M Bank Stadium.
A fumble by the Wildcats’ offense in the third quarter was scooped up by the Titans’ University of Arkansas commit Javion Hunt, who stepped into the end zone to make it a three score game, 28-7 with 3:52 to go in the third quarter.
In the first half, Caden Hendren scored on a sweep down the right sideline in the second quarter to pull the Wildcats within a touchdown. Hendren had over 80 yards rushing.
The Wildcats blocked a Carl Albert field goal attempt and drove into Titan territory with four seconds left in the first half.
A 46-yard field goal attempt by Preston Fansher in a 28 mph, southwest wind fell short of the goal post, and the kick was no good.
The score at halftime was 14-7 in favor of the Titans.
But after a fumble to open the first drive of the third quarter by Piedmont, Carl Albert’s offense scored after an 8-play drive to up the score to 21-7 with about six minutes to go in the third quarter.
Carl Albert is the three time defending Class 5A state champions.
Piedmont won the opening coin toss and deferred to the second half, kicking off to open the game to the Titans who marched down the field to score.
Piedmont’s offense, behind quarterback Levi Davis, had a total of just 154 yards against a Titans defense that toughened in the second half.
