The defending 5A state fast pitch softball champions will host a regional tournament that starts today, Thursday, Oct. 8.

At noon, the Wildcats will play Santa Fe South High School. The other teams in the regional are Del City and Lawton MacArthur.

The Piedmont team is 26-5 going into the regional tournament. The team has scored a lot of runs with offensive outbursts this season, but Coach Keith Coleman said he wants to focus on defense.

“My focus is always pitching and defense. When we play defense I feel like we are a pretty good team and we have pitched it well. “Our kids have definitely improved.”

He said the team can still improve. “We’ve had so many kids out this year and several who have played different positions. We feel like we are at as close to full strength as we can be right now.”

The team has beaten Del City three times, twice in close games this season and the third time in a runaway.

Admission is $7 for adults and students. Kindergarten students and those younger are free.

There will be one point of entry for fans on the southwest side of the stadium.

Masks are required.

Athletic Director Matt Bilyeu said, “On behalf of Piedmont Public Schools, we look forward to welcoming you to our campus for the 5A Region 3 Softball tournament. We are excited to be hosting and are looking forward to two great days of softball.”

The softball stadium is located at 823 Second Street NW in Piedmont behind the middle school.

The winner of the regional tournament will move on to the state tournament Thursday, Oct. 15 through, Saturday, Oct. 17 at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Games will be livestreamed at piedmontwildcats.tv.
