Although the Piedmont annual fireworks show has been canceled, residents are showing off their colors in other ways for this year’s Independence Day.

Despite recent days of high winds and dusty skies, residents and businesses have started decorating properties outdoors with their patriotic colors.

Activities planned for this year include a patriotic parade of homes, fishing tournament and a raffle event.

Five residents, one in each ward, will win a $500 prize for the most patriotic homes.

Residents have until 5 p.m. Thursday to enter. Businesses will also compete for a $500 prize and one local business will be a winner.

The winners will be announced at noon July 4 and cash prizes can be picked up at City Hall 8 a.m. to 5 p.m Monday, July 6.

Jacci Cardwell decorated the front of her Piedmont store, TWD Shirt Company, 115 Monroe Ave.

Cardwell, said raffle tickets are free with a purchase in the store. The prize is a $50 gift card.

Cardwell said she will be open for a Fourth of July sale Saturday.

The raffle tickets are at a number of local businesses through July 3.

Piedmont’s annual July 4 fireworks show is another casualty of uncertainty with the coronavirus situation, said Louanne Trammel, special events coordinator for the city.

This year’s event was going to be called Frontier Freedom Fest with a country and western theme.
