The Wildcats now have a measuring stick.

After starting the season with a three-set win over Del City, Piedmont took the court for its first true test against 2018 state runner-up Mount St. Mary Thursday at Piedmont Intermediate, falling in three sets. The middle set showed the potential of this year’s Cats.

Piedmont fell 25-11 in the first set, but bounced back to nearly tie the match, falling 27-25 in the middle set. The Cats dropped the third set 25-8, but as coach Tom Williams pointed out before the season, the goal is to grow each time on the court.

There are some really tough teams that tell us where we’re at in the big picture,” Williams said in the preseason, pointing to the Rockets as one of those teams. “We just have to take it one game and one point at a time. The confidence level is going to grow.”

Junior Gracie Myatt led the team with seven kills on 11 attempts in the loss. Freshman Kaylie Marshall finished with five kills on seven attempts while senior Jada Ellis and sophomore JoAnna Hunter finished with two kills apiece.

Sophomore Leyla Rallo, freshman Heather Houston and Hunter combined for 14 points won in the service game. Hunter led the team with three aces, Houston finished with two and Rallo and Myatt finished with one apiece. Hunter also led the team with 15 set assists.
