Buyers and sellers flocked downtown Monroe Avenue last Saturday for a sidewalk sale and consignment sale.

Locavores Farms were set up selling their produce during its farmers market.

Businesses along Monroe Avenue held a sidewalk sale as The Old Store celebrated 20 years in business with a one-day consignment sale. More than a dozen residents whose garages were too full signed up to offer a bargain.

Old Store employees estimated at least 300 pieces of goods from more than a dozen people signed up for the offering.

“This was a way for everyone to benefit from each other,” said Old Store owner Joyce Leach. “This was something we wanted to offer to the whole community.”

It was a productive day for Mirror Mirror Boutique owner Jan Swenson.

“It’s been busy,” she said of her sidewalk sale traffic. “I definitely want to do another sale when she (Leach) does another consignment.”

The event comes ahead of Piedmont’s Founder’s Day Festival which coincides with The Old Stores’ annual Junklahoma on September 7. This year the flea market has been featured in Flea Market Décor Magazine as one of the top 12 summer flea markets in the nation.

Businesses are working together to drive traffic downtown. This year organizers put together a monthly “Nights on Monroe” which is an entertainment and shopping event. The event is held the last Thursday night of the month from 6 to 10 and features food trucks and family-friendly activities.

The Monroe Avenue shopping strip is still under construction after a buyer purchased several of the attached buildings for commercial development last year.
