A fire that started in RB Pet Products at 320 NE Madison Avenue caused about $45,000 in damages, the company owner said Monday.

Police officers spotted the fire and called the Piedmont Fire Department at 4:25 Monday morning.

“It could be electrical,” Fire Chief Andy Logan said. “There were no injuries.”
Logan said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Owner Bill Means said he has insurance to cover the damages. Inside, the fire and smoke damage affected the north side of the factory’s dog food and machinery, but by Monday afternoon employees had cleared some of the debris.

The building did not sustain structural damage. A pet food mixer was destroyed.

“We’re lucky it wasn’t worse,” Means said.

The pet food factory has been in business for 45 years.
