Girls Basketball: Piedmont knocks off Class 6A giant

MIDWEST CITY – The top-ranked Wildcats advanced to the semifinals of the 2019 Titan Classic with a win over a Class 6A perennial powerhouse.

Piedmont defeated Broken Arrow, 59-50 Friday at Carl Albert, using a hot start to both the first and second halves on rout to the win.

The Cats opened the game with a 16-10 run and entered halftime with the same six-point lead. After the break, Piedmont extended its lead to nine points, all but sealing the victory, before a 9-9 fourth quarter.

Hot shooting helped spur the Wildcats, shooting 44-percent from the field overall and 33-percent from three-point range. Broken Arrow shot just 34-percent overall and hit just two triples. Piedmont also shot 75-percent from the free-throw line, drilling 12 of 16 attempts from the stripe.

The rebound battle was even and the two teams each turned it over 20-plus times, however, the Cats turned the takeaways into 25 points compared to Broken Arrow’s 17 and Piedmont dominated inside, outscoring the Tigers 32-24 in the paint.

Senior Maci Attalla produced her finest performance of the season, dropping a game-high 28 points on 10-for-12 shooting with a game-high seven rebounds. She also went 8-for-10 from the free-throw line. Junior Tyeshia Anderson scored seven points while sophomore Delanie Crawford and senior Regan Crawford each scored five points.

The win marked the 10th straight for the Wildcats, coming off a 57-37 win over the Oklahoma City Storm in the first round of the tournament.

Piedmont returns to action Friday night to host Class 4A No. 13 Weatherford at Collett Field House.
