2014 started just like 2013 ended for the No. 10 Piedmont boys swim team at the Kingfisher Cut-Off meet on Monday afternoon.
Everyone was looking up at the Wildcats.
For the third straight meet, the Wildcats swim team managed to win in convincing fashion with a total of 380 points, 78 better than second place Kingfisher.
Perhaps the even more impressive stat was they did it without Conner and Tyler St. John in the lineup.
“I was personally surprised that our boys did so well considering we didn’t have the St. John boys there,” Piedmont coach Oralia Rein said. “Some of our swimmers were out of shape and they got a wakeup call in the process. Our girls could have done better as well, but we’ll keep trying to improve.”
In the relay events, the Wildcats ‘A’ team finished below its average placing in third place in the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Ian Dooley, Justin and Jarrod Rein and Lane Tooman collecting a time of 2:08.78 while finishing with a time of 1:48.13 in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Tyler Wade swimming, giving them second place overall.
Piedmont’s relay ‘B’ team comprised of Tyler Wade, Spencer Rhodes, Collin Koehn and John Anderson finished with a time of 2:20.36 in the medley relay to give them fifth place overall while clocking in at 2:00.36 in the Freestyle Relay to claim third place.
It was a good day for the brothers Rein as Jarrod finished in first place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.44) and the 100-yard freestyle (57.98). Meanwhile Justin collected a solid third place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:21.35) and a first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke event (1:04.94).
Lane Tooman was able to collect a fourth place finish in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 26.62 with Tyler Wade clocking in at 27.71 for an eighth place finish in the same event. Tooman also finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle event (57.98).
Wade and Ian Dooley finished in second and third places respectively in the 500-yard freestyle event with times of 6:49.29 and 7:18.38.
Collin Koehn claimed 13th place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 29.19.
Tanner Dixon and Spencer Rhodes finished in 15th and 16th places respectively with times of 30.25 and 30.31 in the 50-yard freestyle event.
For the Lady Wildcats, they claimed a fourth place finish in the team standings with 158 points with Guymon winning with a total of 380 points.
Kasey Rein won both of her events in the 200-yard freestyle and 50-yard freestyle with times of 2:29.28 and 29.50.
In both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle event the team of Mikayla Lunsford, Darien Kohpay, Holly Organ and Kasey Rein registered third place finishes with times of 2:25.00 and 2:08.12 respectively.
Lunsford claimed a sixth place finish overall in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 31.00 before earning a fifth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke event with a time of 1:22.78.
Holly Organ claimed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:38.25.
She also finished in 10th place overall in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 31.75.
Darien Kohpay claimed a 10th place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:44.56.
Piedmont will next be in action Tuesday Jan. 14 at the PCO Invite which will take place from OCCC. Events are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
Just under two weeks later the Piedmont swim team will travel to Harrah for the Suburban Conference meet on the 27th before finishing January at the Mid-Del meet on the 31st.
Regionals will then take place on Feb. 7-8 before the state prelims take place on the 21st.
