The Piedmont Wildcats defeated the Lone Grove Longhorns 8-0 in five innings of Red Dirt League summer baseball action on Thursday night in Piedmont.
The Wildcats quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back. They scored in all but the fifth inning behind seven hits and three Longhorn errors. Gabe Griffith lead the way for the Wildcats, batting 3-4 with a double and 1 RBI.
Brayden Nelson controlled the game from the mound as he struck out six Longhorn batters and allowed only one hit in four innings.
Coach Kory Williams was pleased with his team’s performance.
“We played well. We swung the bats really well,” Williams said. “Gabe Griffith I think was 3-4. We had some guys step up and get on base. We were able to steal a few bags and energy was good.”
Williams likes the experience the team gets during the Red Dirt League season.
“This year is the 10-year anniversary and we’ve been in it the entire time,” he said. “It’s a lot of games in a lot of days, you never know what you’re going to get. The 6 o’clock game it’s whoever wants to be there. Then when it gets night, everyone gets a little more energy when it cools off. But I like the format. We’re done by July 1 and our kids are off for the month and get to go be kids.”
The game was the first for Piedmont in the post-season Red Dirt League tournament. The Wildcats are in Pool D with Lone Grove, Chickasha and Tuttle. Piedmont finishes out pool play on June 27, playing Chickasha at 10 a.m. and Tuttle at 5 p.m. in Piedmont.
The top two teams in each of the four pools advance to the single-elimination tournament held June 28-29 at Piedmont.
