During the course of the season, the Piedmont Lady Wildcats volleyball team has recorded its fair share of upsets.
Monday night though, the tables were turned on the Lady Wildcats by the Chisholm Lady Longhorns, who defeated PHS in four sets (25-18, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-23), just a month removed from when Piedmont swept CHS on their home floor.
“We tried to put out where things went wrong,” Piedmont coach Brad Brucker said. “I take a lot of the blame as far as getting the girls prepared mentally. We were just surprised when they (Chisholm) would make a good play. You can’t be surprised by a team that wants to win that badly. A team that is willing to fight for something is going to beat you every time, and that’s what happened. We tip our hats to them.”
After dropping the first set 25-18, Piedmont jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second set, but was never fully in command.
Chisholm took the lead at 7-6 and never gave it up from that point on, as the Lady Wildcats tied the set multiple times, but never could retake the lead back as the Lady Longhorns went up 2-0 in the match.
Set three was a battle in which the Lady Wildcats knew they had to win in order to stay alive.
Piedmont did just that, hanging on to squeak out a 25-23 victory, and many inside the Piedmont Intermediate Gymnasium felt as though momentum was going to swing in favor of the blue and gold.
Unfortunately, the Lady Longhorns had one final trick up their sleeves as they stole the fourth set, and walked out with a victory over Piedmont.
Anna Young finished with 14 kills on the night for PHS, followed by Kayden Carver with eight.
Bailey Banks had six kills, with Miranda Wagner adding three kills. Kailey LaFollette and Lindsey Malone each put in one kill in the match.
Kasidi Hardy led the Lady Wildcats with 19 assists in the game.
Piedmont will be on the road this evening against Enid, which is a schedule change from the original date listed. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. for varsity with the junior varsity also scheduled to play.
PHS will be back at home Monday night against Bethany.
