Some students of the Piedmont Public Schools District were already on a bus when a Monday morning tornado warning went off for eastern Canadian County.

The students were taken to shelter safety, but other students on routes that run later did not get on their buses Monday morning as heavy rain, lightning and wind came before sunrise and the district canceled school.

A Facebook post from the Piedmont Public Schools Monday reads, “IMPORTANT: Piedmont Schools are CLOSED today. (Monday) Bus riders who have been picked up are taking shelter at Piedmont Early Childhood Center.”

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning at 6:13 a.m. Monday as severe weather moved into parts of Canadian County south of Yukon, and then another funnel formed south of Surrey Hills, according to TV weather reports.

The area remained under a flood watch until 6 p.m. Monday, the weather service reported.

Part of the roadway was washed out on Frisco Road between Arrowhead and Apache, police reported.

No tornadoes touched down as the system moved eastward. But the threat of another round expected at 11 a.m. Monday in central Oklahoma, including the Piedmont area, was enough to call it an inclement weather day for school officials. Skies cleared by noon and rain stopped in the Piedmont area

School was also called off Monday in Yukon, Deer Creek, Putnam City, Edmond and Mustang districts.

Heavy rain filled the bar ditches along County Line Road at NW 164 on the southeast edge of Piedmont city limits and in other low-lying places. Water drained around the intersection of NW 178 and Piedmont Road without any street flooding during the morning.

After a break from the rain for about an hour, more started to fall about 8:30 a.m.
