The inspiration came during a business trip to Florida. Barrel racing could help children with medical needs, Ashley Morrell envisioned.

Morrell, who is a member of the Piedmont Round Up Club, was on a trip to Orlando for work visiting the Children’s Medical Network. The idea hit her that she could combine her horse passion with a fundraising event to help children.

The Piedmont Round Up Club’s 4D Benefit Barrel Race will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Redlands Royse Ranch Arena, 9304 U.S. 81 in El Reno.

Morrell is originally from Kansas City, Mo. She met Nick Morrell, an Oklahoma State University graduate, in Kansas City. After they married, they moved to Mustang. Now she lives with her horses on an acreage in Yukon.

“I decided this is where I wanted to be,” Morrell said.

Two years ago, she was having some problems with a horse. She posted on social media and connected with Macalia Portz, president of the Piedmont Round Up Club.

“I was having issues with a new horse that I had bought,” Morrell said. “Macalia Portz answered that call. We just hit it off immediately. We’re really good friends now,” Morrell said.

Morrell’s company fundraises for the Children’s Miracle Network. She attended a hospital week in Orlando, Florida.

“I was sitting at breakfast in Orlando and I decided I’m going to have a benefit barrel race,” Morrell said.

By April 2022 plans were set for such an event.

Last year was the first benefit barrel race by the Piedmont Round Up Club.

“One dollar for the Children’s Miracle Network can do more than you can imagine. It’s crazy how such a small amount of money can do so much good,” Morrell said.

She said the event last year raised about $3,000. She is hoping for $5,000 this year.

There will be raffles at the event, including a raffle for a Jackery generator. Also, there are more prizes this year for those who compete in the barrel races.
