Not much went right after kickoff.
Piedmont hit a Rock wall at Jelsma Stadium in Guthrie Friday night.
On the opening kickoff, Guthrie’s Tariq Watson caught the ball at the 20-yard line and wasn’t taken down until he was at the 33-yard line in Piedmont territory. The next play was a 33-yard touchdown run by Guthrie running back Jaylen Harper.
On first down of the Wildcats’ first possession they picked up their first penalty, a false start.
On the next play, Mars fumbled and Guthrie recovered at the 32-yard line. Harper took the ball around the right end to put the Blue Jays up 14-0.
Mars first pass was overthrown and sailed into the hands of of Guthrie’s safety Nate Benford. Guthrie’s Dae’Lontae Glover scored the third TD for Guthrie. Piedmont was in a 21-point hole with five minutes to go in the first quarter on a warm and humid night on the northeast side of the Oklahoma City metro area.
At the end of the first half, Guthrie tried to tack on one more touchdown, but Mikah Rocco covered a Guthrie receiver in the end zone to break up one pass. Then with just six seconds left, Guthrie went for the throat and tried another pass to the end zone. Blue Jay receiver Kyran Axtell was open in the end zone, but with Tyson Benford catching up to cover Axtell, the ball fell incomplete.
Piedmont did not pick up their first first down until about 10 minutes remained in the fourth quarter, but held the Blue Jays to just one second half TD.
