The opening kickoff was a good indication that things would fall in Piedmont’s favor against Class 4A’s Blanchard Lions at F&M Bank Stadium Friday night.
The kickoff couldn’t be controlled by the Blanchard front men, and it was recovered by the Wildcats so the offense could take over right away.
Piedmont would control the ball most of the night, holding off Blanchard for a 21-7 non-conference game on Military Appreciation Night at the stadium.
After the kickoff recovery, quarterback Joshua Mars looked as if he was stuffed at the line on a fourth down and 2-yards to go attempt. But before going down, he was able to pitch the ball behind him to Cannon Wood, who picked up the needed yardage and stepped out of bounds at the 9-yard line as he raced into the end zone. Wood scored on the next play.
The 7th-ranked Class 5A Wildcats were able to keep control as needed to hold on for the win Friday night.
In the second quarter, with the Wildcats driving into the red zone, Piedmont’s Jayden Fuston took a pitch from Mars and ran around the right end and flipped into the end zone for a 14-0 lead before halftime.
Blanchard got on the board in the third quarter to pull within a touchdown, 14-7. But Mars was able to keep the offense on the field and the defense rested rolling to a 21-7 win.
The 3-0 Wildcats are home next week against Duncan.
