Piedmont’s fall football season opened against Noble Friday at F&M Bank Stadium with an offensive onslaught.
The final score was Piedmont 52 and Noble 26 after several Noble scores late against Piedmont substitutes who gained experience. Cannon Wood had four touchdowns, the last one a 60-yard run.
Wood had three rushing touchdowns in the first half, and Tyson Benford had two more. Benford also had one TD nullified by an illegal block in the first quarter.
Piedmont led Noble 38-6 at halftime.
To start the third quarter, Wood added another TD on a 60-yard run to extend the lead to 45-6. Noble then fumbled the kickoff.
Noble’s opening drive of the first quarter was cut short by a fumble at midfield. Wood had two TDs and Noble had mistakes, a fumble and an interception, to overcome early. In the second quarter Wood added a third TD. But Noble would get on the board with a TD pass play to Bryson Carey.
Joshua Mars added a 12-yard TD in the third quarter and it was 51-6.
With a kickoff an hour later than normal due to the heat advisory, the 2023 campaign began. And it was Bear season right away.
Noble does not plan to play Piedmont in the future seasons, with Piedmont leaving Class 5A for Class 6A in 2024.
