Piedmont soccer player Evelyn Sydnes helped lead the Lady Wildcats to their first state soccer state title this spring, and she’s not slowed down since. From playing with the Oklahoma City FC semi-pro team to taking part in the Oklahoma-Kansas All-Star game, Sydnes has been busy this summer. The center-back also announced her verbal commitment to the University of Central Oklahoma’s soccer program in late-June.
She spoke with Piedmont-Surrey Gazette sports editor Blake Colston recently about those subjects and much more. Below is the full transcript of their conversation.
BC: Why did you pick UCO? What stood out most to you about the school?
ES: I chose UCO because I loved the environment of the campus and everyone I talked to was so nice. I also think their soccer program is going to help me grow tremendously.
BC: What was the experience like at the Oklahoma-Kansas All-Star game and how did the game go for the team and you individually?
ES: My experience at the All-Star game was awesome. I got to play with, and against some really great players. We lost in penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie, but overall we all played a great game I think Oklahoma deserved to win.
BC: The season is a ways off, but what are some of your individual/team goals next spring?
ES: A team goal I have for next season is to make it to the playoffs. It will be harder this year since we’re going into 6A, but it’s a goal I think we can achieve if we work for it. An individual goal I have for myself is to be the best leader I can for my team this next season.
I am so excited and humbled to announce that I have verbally committed to play soccer at the University of Central Oklahoma. I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for everything they have done for me. I mostly want to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity! 🐴 pic.twitter.com/RT1W96VRDu

BC: Do you still think about the winning state title sometimes, and what do you think about most?
ES: I still think about winning state. I think about how happy we were in that moment and how amazing it felt that all of our work paid off. I will always remember it.
BC: Are you playing club soccer this summer? If so, with which team and what has been the best part?
ES: This summer I’ve been practicing and playing with the Oklahoma City FC semi pro team. The best part about it is getting to play with such skilled and experienced players. It has really helped me grow.
BC: Do you have a favorite pro or college soccer player?
ES: My favorite pro player is Julie Ertz. She’s an inspiration to me because of how hard she works and her passion for the game.
