Trevin Michael is a Detroit Tiger.

The Piedmont native was selected by Detroit in the 10th round (297th overall) during Monday’s Major League Baseball Draft. The signing bonus for that pick is slotted at $152,900.

Michael shot up draft boards late this spring thanks to a red hot close to his senior season at the University of Oklahoma. Serving as the team’s closer, Michael led the Sooners with 10 saves and a 2.89 ERA while striking out 95 in 71.2 innings.

Michael’s work out of the pen helped OU to its first College World Series appearance since 2010. Michael continued his stellar work in Omaha, recording consecutive scoreless outings as the Sooners reached the CWS Championship series.

The right-hander began his college career at NOC-Tonkawa then transferred to Lamar University before using his final season of eligibility in Norman.

Michael is the first Piedmont player selected in the MLB Draft since 2012, when the Boston Red Sox picked pitcher Stephen Williams in the 16th round.
