Schommer
Mary Carolyn Schommer was born on October 17, 1937 in Cunningham, KS to Aaron and Margaret Ball and passed away on July 15, 2022 at the age of 84.
She was a resident of the Piedmont community for over 50 years where she was an active mother of five and later worked as an RN.
She graduated from Cunningham High School in 1955. She was a member of Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church in OKC and a number of organizations including 4-H, Red Hat Ladies, the Piedmont Historical Society, and most recently enjoyed attending senior lunches at the Methodist Church in Piedmont.
She was married to James William Schommer at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cunningham, KS on September 8, 1956. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Schommer, son Michael Don Schommer, brothers Richard and Larry Ball, and parents Margaret and Aaron Ball.
She is survived by two sons, Allen Schommer and wife Debby of Guthrie, Oklahoma, and Mark Schommer of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas; her daughters, Mary Jo McGee and husband Bobby of Flower Mound, Texas, and Amy Estep and husband J.C. of Calumet, Oklahoma; one brother, Don Ball of Central Point, Oregon; and a sister, Kathy Becknell of Fullerton, California six grandchildren: Brooke and Tyler Schommer, Christina and Robert McGee and Tucker and Mason Estep; and nine great-grandchildren: Alexis Weber, Ashton Schommer, Kyra and Mariah Pearman and Ethan, Taegan, Jacob, Mackenzie, and Gavin Schommer.
Carolyn was the life of the party. She loved kids, dancing, basketball, a good joke, and laughing. She was strict with discipline, but she was always there for her kids. Her love of movies began at a small theater in Cunningham. She remained close to her life-long friends with whom she started school and graduated.
She began her nursing career at the Dominican School of nursing in Great Bend, Kansas, but when Jim returned home from his training for the Korean War, she quit and they were married in 1956. Thirty four years later she went back to school, first for her LPN and then to OSU-OKC earning her RN degree in 1993.
Jim and Carolyn had been married for 36 years when Jim passed away in 1992.
Funeral services for Carolyn will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. at the Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church in Oklahoma City.
A private family burial will be held Friday, July 19, 2022 after the funeral services at 4:00 P.M. at the Resurrection Cemetery in Oklahoma City, OK. Wilkinson Mortuary of Watonga in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund in Carolyn’s name is available at F&M Bank in Piedmont, OK It is her wish that this memorial benefit youth sports programs in the community, particularly basketball and tennis which both she and her children loved to play.
