OKLAHOMA CITY – Piedmont hung half a hundred on ’em Thursday night.
The Wildcats dismantled a struggling Western Heights squad 65-0, putting up 51 first-half points en route to their second straight win.
Piedmont has outscored its opponents 135-6 the last two weeks as its young roster continues to grow with games against Carl Albert, Bishop McGuinness and Lawton Ike still to come.
“Playing a game every week is very important,” head coach Jeff Hall said. “Not only in game-shape form, but just the experience part of it.”
Cannon Wood led a balanced Piedmont rushing attack, totaling 101 yards on five carries with touchdowns. Israel Robles had four rushes for 72 yards and a touchdown. Kolten Luschen scored a touchdown and finished with 58 rushing yards.
Quarterback Josh Mars ran for another score and connected on his only pass of the night, a 33-yard strike to Cole Riggs.
Piedmont’s defense got the scoring started with a safety from James Maguire on the Jets’ first drive that started inside the 5-yard line after a botched kickoff return.
The Wildcats (2-3, 2-1) intercepted two passes, recovered a fumble and preserved the shutout in the second half with reserves in the game.
Western Heights was held under 100 total yards for the game.
“The one thing that’s positive about games like this is you see starters cheering on guys that maybe don’t get as much playing time,” Hall said. “I promise you, in the second half the cheers were louder than they were in the first.”
Piedmont takes a big step up in competition next week when it travels to five-time defending state champion Carl Albert.
“We have a lot of respect for them with what they’ve done the last five, six, 10 years,” Hall said. “They’re a quality opponent.”
