Piedmont’s varsity girls cross country team won the Deer Creek Field Run Festival Saturday, beating the defending Class 5A state champion.
“I’m really proud of them,” an excited Coach Kelly Beck said after the finish of the 5K race. “I thought they would be up there in the top three or four so the way they ran was fantastic. I thought our two seniors Macie (Brannum) and Aubrey (Bray) were great and our freshman Lily (Scheck) blew it out of the water.”
The girls beat defending state champs Tulsa Bishop Kelley High School.
The girls results show Cox, 14th, 20:25.95; Scheck, 15th, 20:31.13; Brannum, 16th, 20:33.94; junior Rachel Caldwell, 19th, 20:46.26; Emily Caldwell, 28th, 21:18:89; senior Aubrey Bray, 36th, 21:42.16; Falak Maarouf, junior, 40th, 21:55.83; senior Naia Shepherd, 67th, 23:13.67.
“It’s good for us for the rest of the year. Hopefully we can stay healthy and keep going,”
Beck said.
The boys varsity team finished second Saturday with senior Tanner Bailey finishing sixth in the boys varsity 5K.
Deer Creek won the meet with the Antlers’ Gilbert Velez first and AJ Antonelli finishing second.
Senior Colby Ferbrache finished 14th in the race.
The boys results included Bailey, sixth, 16:301.86; sophomore Dade Humes, eighth, 16:35.43; Ferbrache, 14th, 16:57.33; junior Kanyon Cobbs, 17th,17:06.1; Reese Fricke, junior, 24th, 17:20.09; junior Titus Johnson, 27th, 17:27.48; freshman, Cohen McIntosh, 29, 17:28.74.
The winner Saturday in the boys 5K was Deer Creek’s Gilbert Velez, 15:32.12 and in second place was AJ Antonelli, 15:43.35.
Mustang finished third overall. Piedmont teams will be in the upcoming night Mustang meet.
