Sports Editor Piedmont’s Trevin Michael will finish his college baseball career playing in-state.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound right-handed pitcher is leaving Lamar University and is transferring to the University of Oklahoma for his senior season, he confirmed via his Twitter page.
As a graduate transfer, Michael will be eligible immediately and can play at OU for the 2022 season, per NCAA transfer regulations. He joins a Sooners pitching staff that struggled during the 2021 season, but still managed to land professional contracts for three pitchers on the staff.
During his junior season at Lamar, Michael compiled a 3.28 ERA in 68.1 innings of work while striking out 77 batters. He limited the opposition to a .223 batting average en route to earning second team All-Southland Conference honors.
“He possesses strike out stuff, has a good understanding of the art of pitching, and pitches with a competitiveness we really like,” Lamar head coach Will Davis said after Michael signed with the Cardinals in 2019.
Michael played at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa prior to signing with Lamar. He appeared in 13 games with 13 starts in 2019 for NOC, finishing the year with an 8-2 record. He had a 2.66 ERA through 67.2 innings with 84 strikeouts while allowing just 52 hits and 20 earned runs.
Michael helped Piedmont to a pair of Class 5A state tournaments while playing for the Wildcats.
