Parts of bumpy roadways around Piedmont are being smoothed over, and a plan for more work is being set.

Mustang Road near NW 178 has been improved. Crews were also working on Sara Road near NW 220/Ash Road .

City council members are proposing areas for improvement from each ward.

The council meets next Monday, July 26.

City Council member Ron Cardwell of Ward II has reported clusters of potholes on roads more than 20 years-old across the city with many areas needing emergency repairs. Partnerships with the county will help rebuild about 2 miles to 3 miles of roadway a year at a cost of about $425,000 per mile, Cardwell reports.

Stretches of Sara, Mustang, and other section line roads have potholes that continue to get bigger with recent wear from weather and traffic. NW 164/Washington and N.W 234/Azalea are losing more and more pavement with crumbling shoulders.

A road-grader is being used for the work where there is too much deterioration for patching to help.

Oilfield and construction equipment vehicles continue to wear down Piedmont roads as population also increases with new housing additions.

There are no shortage of large potholes around Piedmont, and many places are beyond being able to be patched, City Manager Jason Orr said.

Voters in 2020 defeated a $28 monthly tax on utility bills for road funding.

In a special meeting in June, the council approved about $400,000 in emergency road repairs.

Areas under contract for repair are on Piedmont Road from N.W.178/Edmond Road to N.W. 220/Ash Street; N.W. 164 between Piedmont and Mustang roads; County Line Road from N.W. 164/Washington Street to N.W. 178/Edmond Road; Van Buren Ave N.W. from Stout Drive to Harrison Avenue; Tyler Avenue N.W on Stout Drive; Monroe Avenue N.E. From Mustang Road to Moose Avenue and Van Buren Avenue N.E. From Mustang Road to Antelope Street.

The council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 26 at City Hall, 314 Edmond Road N.W.
