A preliminary hearing has been set for a 17-year-old from Piedmont who has been charged with first-degree rape as a youthful offender.
An initial appearance before a judge was 1 p.m. Tuesday in Canadian County District Court.
A preliminary hearing conference was set for 9 a.m. May 7, and a preliminary hearing will begin at 9 a.m. June 25 to determine whether the 17-year-old is prosecuted as an adult, youthful offender or juvenile in the first-degree rape case, prosecutors reported Tuesday.
Piedmont Police Chief Scott Singer said police have completed an investigation into a first-degree rape complaint, and the report was forwarded to Canadian County District Attorney’s prosecutors last week.
District Attorney Mike Fields said a youthful offender, first-degree rape charge was filed against the 17-year-old.
The youthful offender charge is for a person 16 or 17 years-old who is accused of a serious felony.
The case has been assigned to Special Judge Khristan Strubhar.
A preliminary hearing will be completed before a decision is made whether the defendant is prosecuted as a youthful offender, a juvenile or as an adult.
