Grapplers ranked seventh in Class 5A, drop one recent close contest, win another convincingly

Piedmont’s wrestling team dropped a close contest to the cross-county rivals El Reno recently.

The Indians, ranked sixth in Class 5A at the time, defeated the Wildcats, 42-33. Piedmont was ranked eighth when the teams met Feb. 1.

Piedmont took an early 9-0 lead with a fall over El Reno’s Nikko Gonzalez at 106-pounds and Tyler Tewell defeated Hunter Yeakey, 11-6 at 113 pounds. The match was a two-point margin in the final minute.

Piedmont got a forfeit at 132 pounds, but El Reno tied the dual at 15-all on Dailey Jennings’ 138-pound 13-9 wire-to-wire win over Alan Flores which was sealed by a takedown with 22 second left.

El Reno’s Ryan Sigler logged a first-period takedown of Jordan Fuston en route to a 5-0 win.

On Feb. 4, the Wildcats defeated Geary by a score of 54-12.

The team is ranked seventh in Class 5A with a 7-8 record.
