Former athletic director files for school board seat

A race for a Piedmont School Board seat is set for April, and one candidate is a former Piedmont Schools athletic director, the Canadian County Election Board reports.

Filing for Ward 1 seat last week was challenger Layne Jones. Jones will face incumbent Zachary Myatt.

The election for the seat will be Tuesday, April 6.

The filing period ended at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Myatt is currently serving in Ward 1 as school board clerk.

Myatt is coming to the end of his first five year term.

Jones, a Piedmont resident, left the athletic director’s job in June after his contract expired at the end of that monthly.

A new basketball arena that was approved by voters in February. Voters approved a $37.5 million bond issue by 61.36% of the votes to 38.64%.

Jones said he had decided to focus on a bottled water and iced tea business in Oklahoma City.

Since the bond issue was approved by voters, the district has faced the challenges of the ongoing pandemic.

Piedmont Schools went to an alternating A and B schedule with students 7-12 grades attending three or two days a week based on the first letter of their last name.

The district has gone to all virtual, remote learning until after the Christmas break. In-person learning will resume on Jan. 19, 2021. Masks are required by the district.

District officials have kept track of COVID-19 cases with information posted weekly on their school website.
