Piedmont is under an ice storm warning in effect until 1 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service reports.
School will be virtual only on Tuesday.
“Due to inclement weather, tomorrow, Tuesday, October 27th, will be a virtual learning day for all PPS students. All Piedmont School facilities will be closed. Students can access their assignments through Google Classroom. If a student is unable to complete his/her posted assignments due to no electricity or connectivity, he/she will have additional time to complete assignments once we return to in-person learning,” according to a post from the district.
Piedmont Public Schools officials urged parents to pick up students early Monday after two schools lost power.
There were 61 power outages in Piedmont reported by Oklahoma Gas & Electric Co. Monday afternoon.
Also, Yukon schools Redstone Intermediate and Surrey Hills Elementary lost power Monday morning as freezing rain coated elevated surfaces, tree limbs and power lines across Canadian County.
Periods of significant icing will last through Wednesday with accumulations of up to a half of an inch, the weather service reports. Travel is discouraged.
Early Tuesday temperatures will drop with a mix of sleet after 4 a.m. and a low of 27 degrees. North winds will gust up to 25 mph with a 70% chance of precipitation. A tenth of an inch of ice is possible.
The high temperature Tuesday will be 33 with a north wind gusting around 24 mph. More ice accumulation is expected. The freezing rain will not let up Wednesday but sunshine will return by the afternoon Thursday and Friday, the weather service reports. Saturday and Sunday temperatures will be in the 60s with sunny skies.
