The Piedmont eighth grade football season has been sidelined by COVID-19.

Exposure to cases resulted in 45 players having to face two week quarantine, said Superintendent Dr. James White.

On Monday, White said there were no teachers who had reported testing positive, but seven teachers were awaiting test results.

The number of students quarantined varies from day to day as students return from quarantines.

School officials had not announced a decision on the status of the remainder of the eighth grade football season Wednesday.

A schedule on the district’s website shows the eighth grade team does not have their first game until Sept. 24 at El Reno. The schedule shows an eight-game season through Oct. 27 when the team is scheduled to play Guthrie at home.

Enrollment is down in the district by about 200 students this year at 4,424 students. There are a number of students who have enrolled in online virtual schools outside the district, White said.

More students are expected to return to the district as the semester progresses, White said.

Piedmont Schools opened Thursday, Aug. 20 with masks required five days a week for pre-kindergarten to sixth grade and two or three days a week in groups A and B for grades seven to 12th grade.

The district has had 22 teachers quarantined, 13 students test positive for COVID-19 and 141 students quarantined since Aug. 20.
