Piedmont firefighters battled a suspicious blaze in a storage facility early Tuesday.

About 5:20 a.m., fire broke out at Piedmont Mini Storage on N Piedmont Road, Fire Chief Andy Logan said.

“We arrived to find about 10 units fully involved,” Logan said. “We were able to get a knock down on the fire to prevent the spread.”

Ten units of the storage facility were destroyed and five units sustained smoke damage.

Jack Johnson, manager, surveillance video has been turned over to the police department.

Johnson said tenants are working on determining what inventory was lost and what the total damage estimate to contents and the building will be. He said the storage facility is insured.

A firefighter was treated at the scene for heat exhaustion, Logan said.

He said the cause is under investigation, and police are now involved.

A report has been completed by firefighters and information has been given to the Piedmont Police Department. The hot weather makes firefighting difficult, even in the early morning hours, he said. Firefighters from Deer Creek assisted Piedmont firefighters.

“It’s extremely hot out and we give a lot of credit to our friends at the Deer Creek Volunteer Fire Department,” Logan said.

“It helps to get more people on the ground,” Logan said.

Logan said firefighters used the new truck, engine 4, to battle the blaze Tuesday.

Police Chief Scott Singer said no arrest has been made, but the incident remains under investigation Tuesday.
