As in most cities in Canadian County, the use, sale and possession of fireworks is illegal in Piedmont.
Violators can face a municipal fine up to $205.
No complaints about fireworks in Piedmont have been made this year, said Police Chief Scott Singer.
Singer urges people to avoid using their own fireworks.
“Independence Day is a day of celebration, and I think it is a real tragedy when you are having to call the insurance company because your house burned down or you have to visit someone who is in the hospital because of an injury,” Singer said.
Fireworks are illegal in Oklahoma City and Yukon, but are legal in Mustang during the Fourth of July holiday period.
The annual Piedmont fireworks show was canceled for 2020 due to COVID-19.
Fire Chief Andy Logan said there were several fires last year that might have been started by fireworks.
“We we’re pretty busy last year with fires. It appeared fireworks were used in places last year,” Logan said.
He said recent rains helped keep grass and brush green this year, but high winds and hot temperatures could dry out the landscape soon.
“The risk is not just wildfires, but also injury,” Logan said.
