For Piedmont’s girls basketball team, defending their state championship starts now.
The Wildcats are currently playing in the 2019 Edmond North summer league, looking to hone their skills after their 2019 Class 5A state championship run.
Coach Eric Carr and his squad now know what it takes to reach the top and now they have to learn what it takes to stay there. Carr has been able to not only get his starters and returning players from last season work, but also players looking to earn playing time this coming winter.
“We’ve been able to work on things as a group, not just the starters and girls from last year, but also some girls looking to earn a spot or some playing time,” Carr said. “Summer league is always good to keep the girls going and to start working on things for the upcoming season.”
Piedmont has taken on Seminole, Yukon, Edmond North, Choctaw, Westmoore, Norman North, Moore and Ripley and will close out the league today against Edmond Memorial and Blanchard.
“It’s good to get the team back out on the court and tinker with things and work on things offensively and defensively,” Carr said. “The title defense starts right here and the girls are ready for it.”
Piedmont went 24-4 last year on route to the state title, defeating El Reno in the championship game in March.
