Hunter Oden was one of Piedmont’s most prolific athletes during the 2018-19 sports year.

The senior basketball star and Oklahoma Christian-signee for golf helped lead the Wildcats on the court and the course, leading each team in multiple ways. He was one of the boys basketball team’s leading scorers and rebounders and was the No. 1 player for the boys golf team on its run to the state tournament in the spring.

Oden has a plan for his golf and academic career. When he’s not on the course, he prefers to lay back and play video games or watch sports. He sat down with sports editor Trey Hunter for an interview this week. This is what he had to say:

Q: What is your favorite hobby outside of basketball and golf and why?

A: I like to play video games. I really like playing NBA 2K and Fortnite. It’s a good getaway from sports and it helps get my mind off things sometimes. I’m not that good, but it’s just fun to play.

Q: Have you grown up or lived in Piedmont your whole life? What is your favorite part about growing up in the town and going to school at Piedmont?

A: I like the small-town feel. I grew up with a lot of my friends here and we’ve been hanging as pretty much the same group since we were kids. It’s cool because there’s not a lot of people moving in and out it’s just Piedmont kids..

Q: What is your favorite subject in school and why?

A: My favorite subject is math. I’m kind of going into math in college and I guess being an athlete, numbers kind of come easier.

Q: Who would you say is your hero? It could be a family member, athlete, etc. and why?

A: My Mom. Just because she is always there for me and how strong she is. She’s pretty much the one that helps me with everything and has always been there for me whether it’s athletics or school work or anything.

Q: Have you chosen what you want to study in college? Why?

A: I haven’t thought that far. I really like OC’s campus and the practice facility is great. It was kind of no-brainer for me to go there.

Q: What has been your biggest takeaway or lesson that you’ve learned while playing basketball and golf and why?

A: I’d say just having fun and competing. Never quitting no matter the situation and fighting through adversity. Putting everything behind you after one hole and move on. One stroke isn’t going to kill you.
