EL RENO – The Wildcats are heading to the 2019 Class 5A state tournament.
Piedmont finished third in the Class 5A regional tournament Tuesday at Crimson Creek, qualifying as one of 12 teams to compete for the state title Monday and Tuesday at Lawton Country Club.
The Wildcats turned in a total score of 650 after two rounds of play at Crimson Creek. Guthrie won the tournament with a total score of 600 while Bishop McGuinness finished second at 627. Duncan also qualified after shooting 664 as well as Noble with a 665 and El Reno with a 679.
Will Craig and Hunter Oden led the way in the first round, each shooting in the 70s. Craig fired a 4-over-par 76 while Oden shot a 6-over-par 78 to pace the Cats. Haydn Rodriguez shot a 10-over-par 82, Garrett Morris shot a 15-over-par 87 and Harden Jones turned in a 16-over-par 88.
Craig again paced the Wildcats in the second round, shooting a 7-over-par 79 for a total score of 155. Morris shaved seven strokes off his first round score with a 8-over-par 80 for a total of 167. Jones shaved six strokes with a 10-over-par 82 for a total of 170. Oden and Rodriguez struggled in the second round. Oden shot a 14-over-par 86 for a 164 while Rodriguez shot a 20-over-par 92.
The 2019 Class 5A state tournament is set for Monday and Tuesday in Lawton. The individual medalists are set to tee off at 8 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. on Monday before the team groups get started at 8:30 a.m. Piedmont tees off on hole No. 1 at 8:40 a.m.
The Cats are joined by Guthrie, McGuinness, Duncan, Noble, El Reno, Bishop Kelley, McAlester, Coweta, Collinsville, Claremore and Tahlequah at state.
