Piedmont cruised to its second district win of the season Tuesday night, knocking off Western Heights 6-0 at F&M Bank Stadium.

Freshman Aubrey Bray and senior Mia Rosell each scored two goals in the game while junior Valerie Flores picked up two assists. Junior McKinley Lee and sophomore Lenzie Stephenson also scored in the match. Senior Avery Brucker, sophomore Kenley Gold and senior Nicole Hyde all recorded one assist.

“They didn’t get a shot on goal, so that was really nice,” Piedmont coach Brad Brucker said after the win over the Jets. “I don’t remember Maci (Attalla) even touching the ball. We completely controlled the game, start to finish. The exciting part was we had just beat them 2-0 and then we turn around and win 6-0 and it could have been more.”

The Wildcats entered the match coming off a loss to Class 6A Yukon in the 2019 Northwest Classen Tournament last weekend. They reached the championship match after defeating Class 6A U.S. Grant 8-0 and Western Heights 2-0. The tournament followed a 3-1 loss to Bishop McGuinness on March 26 at home.

“For me, we have a few games per year that really test us,” Brucker said. “Bishop McGuinness and Yukon were two of those.”

Brucker said his team didn’t quite play up to its potential against the Irish, but turned that around even in a losing effort to the Millers Saturday.

“I was excited to see if we would play better against Yukon after the first test against McGuinness,” Brucker said. “And we really did. We had the better part of that game. We missed four, really good opportunities and skimmed the post twice. We controlled the midfield really well too.”

The Wildcats now turn their focus to the final five district matches of the season, starting with a matchup against Lawton MacArthur in Lawton tomorrow night before returning home to host Heritage Hall Tuesday night. The team also has matches against Lawton Ike, Santa Fe South and Altus remaining.

“The two biggest will be Heritage Hall and Santa Fe South,” Brucker said of potential tests before the postseason. “Heritage Hall is always our toughest district game. Santa Fe South will also be a big game for us. We’ll have to play well to win both.”

The Cats and the Highlanders are set to square off at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Apr. 5.
